Mesa State (22-19, 20-16) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings on the way to an 8-3 win over Western New Mexico in game two of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bergman Field. The Mavericks dropped game one, 7-2.
In game two Lauren Cross' three-run homerun with two outs gave the Mavs a 3-0 lead after one inning. MSC tacked on three more runs in the second on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch (Lita Romero) scoring Megan Smith (walk) for a 4-0 lead. Taylor Gross' single through the left side scored two more runs pushing the lead to 6-0 after two complete innings.
The Mustangs cut the lead in half on a three-run (unearned) homerun by Kaitlynn Barnes.
MSC added two runs in the fifth on a single by Lisa Pille scoring Smith and Cross.
Ashley Pulido earned her fifth win of the season (5-2) allowing three-unearned runs on five hits; one walk and five strikeouts.
Cross went 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI. Pille was 2 for 3 from the plate scoring one run and knocking in two in the victory.
Western New Mexico won game one 7-2 breaking open the game with four runs in the six inning to secure the victory. The Mustangs tallied 11 hits and starting pitcher Bri Robles allowed just five hits; picking up her 13th victory of the season.
WNMU never trailed in the game holding a 3-1 lead after four innings. MSC pulled to within one run (3-2) in the fifth before the Mustangs put up four in the top of the sixth.
Sara Jordan allowed seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits; one walk and struck out four.
The two teams will play the final regular season doubleheader Sunday starting at 11 a.m. The Mustangs hold a one game lead for first place in the RMAC west division.
