Mesa State women's lacrosse team notched their first away game, defeating host Westminster College (Utah) 16-10 Thursday evening. The win improved their record to 3-8 overall and snapping a two-game losing streak. The Griffins dropped just their fifth game this season, falling to 16-5 overall.
Taylor Lansdown scored the first goal of the game in the first 13 seconds to give the Mavs a 1-0 lead. Westminster settled in and scored the next three goals in a three minute span for a 3-1 advantage. MSC tied the game at 3-3 off goals by Amanda Simon and Lansdown's second goal of the game.
The Griffins jumped back up to a two goal lead on back-to-back goals by Chelsea Farrell for a 5-3 lead with 16:08 left in the first half. In the next 13 minutes the Mavericks scored five unanswered goals, including two free position goals, for an 8-5 lead. Alexis Rawlings scored three of the five goals; two consecutive and one free position goal. Simon tallied her second goal of the half and Allie Henderson scored a free position goal at the 5:10 mark.
Westminster closed the gap to 8-6 on another goal by Farrell. MSC closed out the half on goals by Camille Calladine . Henderson scored with 38-seconds left in the half for a 10-6 halftime lead.
MSC opened the second half on consecutive goals by Rawlings to take a 12-6 lead. Westminster's offense scored three goals to pull to within 12-9 with just under 12-minutes remaining in the game.
MSC put the game away with four straight goals (16-9), ending the flurry with just six minutes left in the game. Simon scored twice for a 14-9 advantage followed by Rawlings' sixth goal of the game to make it 15-9. Lansdown scored the final goal for MSC with 5:57 left on the clock. Westminster tacked on a final goal on a free position shot for a final score; 16-10.
Rawlings finished with a game high six goals, seven draw controls and five ground balls. Simon recorded four goals, three assists, two ground balls and two draw controls. Lansdown tallied three goals and two assists. Henderson had two goals and one assists and Calladine finished with one goal and one assist.
MSC goalkeeper Lauren Wells had 14 saves, seven in each half and two ground balls in the victory.
Mesa State will play University of Utah's club team Friday afternoon at 4:30 in Salt Lake City.
