Mavs split with FLC, fall in extra innings

Mesa State (13-14, 11-11) split Saturday's doubleheader with visiting Fort Lewis College (10-15, 9-11) winning game one 9-5 before falling 7-5 in eight innings.

Shannon McClenahan went 3 for 3 in game one with a run and an RBI to help the Mavs snap a five-game losing streak. Danielle Vallie and Gabriella Parra each registered two hits and combined for two runs and two RBI.

MSC led 3-0 through two innings scoring the first run of the game on a bases loaded walk. FLC scored two runs in the top of the third to pull to within 2-3. MSC answered back in the bottom with a two-out rally scoring four runs on four hits.

The Mavericks held a 7-2 lead until the Skyhawks' three-run sixth inning to close the gap to 5-7. Mesa State sealed the victory with back-to-back homeruns in the sixth by Parra and Lauren Cross. Starting pitcher Sara Jordan set down the Skyhawks in order to earn her eighth win on the year. Jordan allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out four.

In game two FLC broke a 5-5 tie in the eighth inning scoring two runs on three hits to earn the split.

MSC's Parra got the start for the Mavs, her first this season and went six innings before handing the ball over to Jordan. The Mavs led 2-0 after one inning and the Skyhawks scored four (all un-earned) in the top of the third for a 4-2 lead. MSC got one run back in the third on a sac fly by Jordan to score Parra. The Mavs tied the game in the fourth on a sac bunt RBI by Taylor Gross to score Pille.

In the seventh the Skyhawks took a 5-4 leading off the inning with back-to-back doubles. Lauren Cross' lead-off homerun in the bottom tied the game at 5-5 forcing extra innings. FLC took advantage of an error to start the inning, resulting in both runs being unearned.

 MSC stranded a bass runner in the bottom of the eighth as Gross walked.

Fort Lewis had seven runs (one earned) on 12 hits. MSC finished with five runs on nine hits and two errors. Cross, Jordan and Lisa Pille each finished with two hits. 

The two teams will play a two-game set Sunday starting at 11:00 A.M. at Bergman Field.
