Megan Smith's lead-off homerun in the bottom of the fifth led the Mavericks (18-15, 16-12) to a 9-1 win over visiting Metro State College (25-12, 20-9) in game two of a doubleheader.  The Roadrunners won game one 5-4.

Metro led 1-0 after one inning and the Mavs put up five runs in the second on three consecutive hits to start the inning. Gabriella Parra led off with a single up the middle. Lauren Cross' double down the left field line advanced Parr to third. Sara Jordan's single up the middle scored Parra and Cross for a 2-1 lead. Smith walked and Shannon McClenahan hit her second homerun of the year to centerfield for a 5-1 lead. 

MSC scored two in the third off a single by Lisa Pille scoring Parra (singled) and Danielle Vallie (hit by pitch). The Mavericks put up one run (unearned) in the fourth on one hit (Vallie) and Taylor Gross who walked to lead off the inning scored.

Smith's home run in the fifth sealed the run-rule victory and the doubleheader split.

Sara Jordan improved to 12-7 allowing one run on three hits in five innings.

Metro State took game one 5-4 scoring two runs each in the first two innings and adding one run in the third to take a 5-0 lead. MSC tacked on one run in the bottom of the fourth. In the sixth inning Jordan's three-run blast scored Parra (singled) and Cross (singled) to pull the Mavs to within one run (4-5). Metro closed out the seventh on three consecutive outs to take game one.

Jordan went 7.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits. She was 3 for 3 from the plate with 1 run and three RBI.

Mesa State and Metro will play two on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
