Mesa State softball (17-14, 15-11) extended their win streak to four with a doubleheader sweep over the Regis Rangers Saturday afternoon in Durango. The win moved the Mavs in to first place in the west division.
Sara Jordan picked up her third consecutive win allowing one run (unearned) on four hits in 7.0 innings.
Regis scored one run in the top of third inning and the Mavericks answered back with three runs in the bottom half. With one out Taylor Gross and Danielle Vallie each singled before Lauren Cross' double to left center gave the Mavs a 2-1 lead. Next batter Sara Jordan doubled to left field and Cross scored for a 3-1 advantage.
In game two MSC scored 12 runs on 11 hits and scored at least one run in all but the first inning. Regis jumped out to a 4-0 in the second inning. MSC got two runs in the bottom half off a two-run double to right field by Megan Smith.
MSC took a 6-4 lead after three scoring four runs on three hits with an RBI single by Vallie, double by Cross and a single by Jordan.
Regis took back the lead in the fourth scoring three runs on four hits for a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the inning MSC regained the lead (8-7) for good scoring two runs on a single by Gabriella Parra.
MSC put one run up in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 12-7 lead. Regis added a run in the seventh before the Mavericks closed out the game and the series sweep.
Cross was 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI. Vallie went 2 for 3, scoring twice and knocking in one run.
Mesa State returns home this weekend as they host Metro State in a four game series beginning Saturday at Noon.
Saturday is the Mavs annual “Swing for Life” game and Cancer awareness weekend.
