Mavs Win Again; Beat Dominican 6-5

Mesa State (2-6, 2-3) men's lacrosse won its second consecutive game and remains undefeated at home beating Dominican University (Calif.) 6-5 Friday night at Walker Field. The Penguins were undefeated in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association action until this evening. The loss dropped Dominican to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in WILA play.  

MSC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Trace Wollner, seven minutes in to the game off an assist by Michael Giffen. Nick Cosgrove scored to put the Mavericks up 2-0 on a man-up opportunity with 3:40 remaining in the first period. Dillon Bernad scored the first of his two goals on the night with a goal with just 23 seconds left in the period.

Dominican shut-out the Mavs in the second period and pulled to within a goal at halftime, 2-3. The Penguins scored in the last four minutes of the second period on goals by Emmett Faricy and Cam Evangelho.

Mesa State stretched the lead back to three goals in the third period on back-to-back goals by Andrew Kurth (9:04) and Bernad's second goal of the evening with 2:28 remaining for a 5-2 lead. Dominican's Dalton Copeland closed the gap to 3-5 on a shot and goal at the 1:51 mark.

Trevor Ecton's man-up opportunity goal (9:44) in the final period gave the Mavs a 6-3 lead.  The Penguins scored the final two goals of the night, including the final goal with one-second left in regulation, falling to the Mavericks 6-5.

MSC goalkeeper Brad Brandenburg had 11 saves on the night.

The Mavericks tallied 31 ground balls and were 2 of 3 on extra man opportunities. MSC was 15 for 15 on clears and 7 of 13 on face-offs.

Dominican out-shot MSC 24-21 and finished with 20 groundballs. DU was 11 of 12 on clears and 6 of 13 on face-offs.

Johnny Nitti led the Mavs with eight groundballs followed by Brandenburg with five.

MSC will be back in action at home next Friday versus Grand Canyon University, 7 p.m. at Walker Field.
