MSC split home opener vs. Mountain Lions

Mesa State (6-5, 4-2) split its home opener Saturday versus UC-Colorado Springs (5-10, 2-4) at Bergman Field. MSC won game one 6-2 and fell 8-5 in game two.

Sara Jordan picked up her third win of the year (3-1) and the Mavs registered 13 hits in game one. Five players had multiple hits including Danielle Vallie, Gabriella Parra, Jordan and Gabriella Parra each going 2 for 3 from the plate. Pille scored twice and hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning.

MSC led 2-0 through three innings when the Mountain Lions tied the game at 2-2 on a home run by Mathewson and Blanton. MSC took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI double by Taylor Gross. MSC scored three runs in the fifth.

In game two the Mountain Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead scoring three runs in the second and fourth inning. A run in the fifth gave UCCS a 7-0 lead on 13 hits.

MSC's five-run sixth inning rally pulled the Mavericks to within two runs (5-7) helped along by a three-run homerun by Jordan with one out. Lauren Cross doubled to left center and advanced to third on a fly ball to leftfield. Cross scored on a failed pick-off attempt and the Mavs trailed 5-7. UCCS closed out the inning with a strike out.

UCCS scored an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. In the Mavs seventh a two-out single by Vallie was the lone hit as UCCS closed out the game.

Sam Farris (2-3) took the loss going 3.0 innings and giving up five runs on six hits.

MSC will play a doubleheader Sunday versus the Mountain Lions beginning at 11 a.m. at Bergman Field
