Mesa State softball (12-13, 10-10) dropped a four-game series at Adams State College falling 16-15 in nine innings to close out the four-game set.
Saturday's doubleheader the Grizzlies scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game one of the series. MSC took a 5-4 lead in the top of the inning scoring three runs on three hits. ASC answered back with four hits to score the winning run on a walk-off single to right center.
Game two of Saturday's DH the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead after one inning and held that lead until the Grizzlies tied the game in the third on a homerun. MSC took the lead back in the top of the fourth on a two-out double by Danielle Vallie to score Lita Romero. Again the Grizzlies took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs on four hits for a 4-2 lead. ASC increased the lead with two runs in the fifth on a two-run homerun and a 6-2 advantage. MSC scored one run in the fifth to pull to within 3-6 before the Grizzlies shut out the Mavs in the seventh for the doubleheader sweep.
Sunday's game one of the doubleheader was a 5-inning run-rule game the Grizzlies won 16-5. ASC scored runs in all but one inning and registered 10 runs in the second inning. ASC took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first but the Mavs tied the game in the top of the second on singles by Lauren Cross, Shannon McClenahan and a double by Romero. A single by Taylor Gross advanced Romero to third before she was thrown out at home plate.
Adams State scored 10 runs on eight hits in the bottom of the second inning for a 13-3 lead. The Grizzlies added three more runs in the fourth for a 16-3 advantage. MSC tacked on three runs in the fifth with the help of a triple by Megan Smith before falling 16-5 in game three.
The series finale went nine innings before the Grizzlies could claim the series sweep. MSC trailed 1-0 after one inning before taking the lead in the third in a six-run inning which the Mavs scored all six runs with two outs. Adams State scored one run in the bottom of the third to pull to within 2-6.
Each team scored three runs in the fourth with the Mavericks still holding a 9-5 lead. ASC scored one run in the fifth (6-9) and the Mavs got the run back in the top of the sixth (10-6). The bottom of the seventh inning the Grizzlies scored seven runs on seven hits including a grand slam by Lovato and two batters later a two-run homerun by Payne. A solo homerun followed before the Mavs could get out of the inning and now the Grizzlies led 13-10.
MSC battled back in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 13-13 with an RBI single by Megan Smith and a two-out, two-run homerun by Sara Jordan. The Grizzlies recorded the third out and the game entered extra innings.
MSC scored two runs in the top of the eighth with two outs the Mavs got back-to-back doubles by Vallie and Gabriella Parra to take a 15-13 lead. The Grizzlies answered once again tying the game scoring both runs with two outs. A single to start the inning and then two outs by the Mavericks had the Grizzlies down to their last out. A double and two consecutive singles scored two runs to send the game in to the ninth inning.
MSC registered one hit in the ninth but could not score the runner from second as the Grizzlies closed out the inning on a strike out. MSC set down the first two batters in the ninth before a single to shortstop and the winning run on first. The next batter doubled down the leftfield line and scored the runner as the Grizzlies closed out the series sweep 16-15.
The two teams combined for 36 hits in the game (MSC-14) and six homeruns, five by the Grizzlies.
MSC will return to action at home this weekend as they host Fort Lewis College Saturday and Sunday.
