Mesa State (1-6, 1-2) men's lacrosse defeated visiting Adams State College 9-7, notching its first victory in the Mavs' inaugural season. The loss dropped the Grizzlies to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
MSC never trailed in the game jumping out to a 3-0 lead to start the game. Dakota Klossner scored in the first 58 seconds of the game on assist from Trace Wollner. At the 11:38 mark Dillon Bernad pushed the lead to 2-0 (assist-Trevor Ecton). Klossner scored his second goal of the day (8:39) to extend the lead to 3-0 (assist-Jojo Milosevic). ASC's Mac Piper got the Grizzlies on the board scoring on an extra-man opportunity with 5:57 remaining in the first period.
The Mavericks dominated the second period outscoring the Grizzlies 3-1 on goals by Kade Robinson (assist-Nick Cosgrove) and a 4-1 lead. Adams' lone goal in the second period cut the lead to 4-2 halfway through the second period. MSC closed out the final 2:03 of the period on back-to-back goals by Ecton (assist-Andrew Kurth) and Kurth (assist-Cosgrove). MSC led 6-2 at halftime despite the Grizzlies six extra-man opportunities (1 of 6).
MSC took their largest lead of the game early in the third period on a goal by Wollner and a 7-2 MSC lead. Adams' goal at 10:10 of the period gave the Mavs a four-goal lead, 7-3. Ecton pushed the lead back to five goals (8-3) at 5:49 remaining on an assist from Bernad. ASC's Bertrand scored on a man-up opportunity to close out the third period with the Mavs leading 8-4.
The Grizzlies scored first in the fourth period, their first consecutive goals of the day, on a man-down opportunity and now trailed 8-5. MSC answered a minute later on Ecton's third goal of the day (Assist-Cosgrove) and a 9-5 lead.
With three minutes remaining in regulation the Grizzlies' Johnny Neal scored to pull to within 9-6. ASC's Mac Piper scored 15-seconds later and now the Grizzlies trailed 9-7 with 2:46 left in the game. ASC failed to take advantage of late penalties on the Mavericks and man-up opportunities with several shots sailing wide.
MSC's Ecton led the Mavericks with three goals and had one assist. Klossner tallied two goals. Wollner, Kurth, Robinson and Bernad each had a goal. Cosgrove had a team high three assists.
Goalkeeper Brad Brandenburg was credited with 12 saves in his first win of the year.
MSC had 35 shots, 27 ground balls and finished 19 of 26 on clears. The Mavericks were 0 for 3 on extra-man opportunities.
ASC finished with 34 shots, 20 ground balls and 16 of 20 on clears. The Grizzlies were 2 of 15 on extra-man opportunities.
MSC will host Dominican University next Friday (4/1/11) at 7 p.m. at Walker Field
