Mesa State women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-15 contest at Walker Field to visiting Fort Lewis College Wednesday afternoon. The Skyhawks' Abby Kvidera scored with 1:25 remaining in the game for the come from behind victory.
MSC trailed 7-10 at intermission and opened the second half with two goals (Maria Heilner, Alexis Rawlings) in the first 45 seconds to pull to within 9-10. FLC extended the lead to 12-9 on consecutive goals at the 26:28 mark.
The Mavericks scored three un-answered goals to tie the game at 12-12 on back-to-back goals by Amanda Simon and the tying goal by Brianna True (assist Heilner).
The two teams traded goals and the Mavs took a two shot lead (15-13) on three straight goals by Tayler Lansdown, Allie Henderson and Heilner with just over 10 minutes left in the game.
The two teams played the next four minutes without either team scoring before the Skyhawks went on a three-goal spurt beginning at the 6:21 mark. Kvidera scored to close the gap to 14-15 and at 5:29 FLC's Jessica Norby scored to tie the game. With 1:25 left Kvidera took control of a loose ball and scored the game winning goal..
MSC started the game scoring the first four goals in the first nine minutes of the game. FLC outscored the Mavs 10-3 in the final 19:30 of the first half.
MSC out shot the Skyhawks 39-32 and held a groundball advantage of 29-17. Two of the Mavs goals were on a player up opportunity and the goal by True in the second half came on a player down opportunity. Each team had 19 turnovers.
Goalkeeper Lauren Wells was credited with 12 saves.
Amanda Simon and Rawlings each tallied four goals. Henderson had three goals and Heilner finished with two goals and a team high two assists. Lansdown and True each had a goal.
FLC's Kvidera led all players with five goals on the day.
MSC will return to action Saturday at Walker Field against Adams State. The game is set for 4 p.m.
