Softball splits series with Lopers

Mesa State (12-9, 10-6) wrapped up a four-game home series with Neb.-Kearney Sunday afternoon with a victory in game one; 4-1, with a sixth-inning rally to clinch the win. UNK won game two 8-3 to improve to 7-13 overall and 7-7 in RMAC action.

In game one UNK held a 1-0 lead in to the sixth inning when the Mavericks scored four runs on two hits and took advantage of a Loper error for the win. UNK pitcher allowed just two hits in the game, four runs (three earned) and struck out five. Shannon McClenahan was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Lita Romero hit a bunt single and Danielle Vallie reached on an error to load the bases. Taylor Gross' single to left field scored two. Gabriella Parra ground out to second scored Vallie. Gross scored on a wild pitch before the Lopers closed out the inning with a pop-up from Sara Jordan and ground out by Megan Smith.

Jordan set down the Lopers in the seventh to pick up win number seven. Jordan allowed one run on five hits and struck out four.

In game two MSC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. UNK answered back in the top of the second scoring five runs on three hits for a 5-1 lead. The Mavs two runs in the fifth closed the gap to 3-5 but failed to get a hit in the final two innings. UNK scored three insurance runs in the seventh on four hits, including a two-run homerun by Austin Wilson.

MSC starter Shaylee Yellowhair (0-1) was credited with the loss allowing four runs on two hits in one inning. Ashley Pulido came on in relief (6.0 innings) giving up four runs on six hits, striking out a season high six Lopers.

MSC will travel to Adams State College next weekend for a four-game series with the Grizzlies.
