Mesa State men's tennis team traveled to the desert for spring break posting a 2-4 record on the road.
MSC opened the week at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California losing 7-2. Andres Hernandezdefeated COD's Sergio Chip 6-4, 6-4 at number three singles.
Grand Canyon University defeated the young Maverick squad 8-1 in Phoenix on Wednesday (3/16). The Antelopes swept the singles action but the Mavs' number three doubles team of Jonathan Casson and Isaac Brown won 8-5 over Kevin Anderson and Jacob Spizman.
MSC bounced back in the afternoon match defeating Mesa Community College 8-1. The men swept the doubles action and won five of the six singles matches for the victory.
Thursday (3/17) the Mavericks picked up their second consecutive win in a 9-0 sweep over Roger Williams University. MSC won five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
St. John's (MN) defeated MSC 7-2 later in the day. The Mavs' Brason Hollabaugh defeated his number two singles opponent 6-3, 6-2. Hernandez (#3) set down his challenger 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 for the team's two points.
MSC closed out the week-long trip falling to Connecticut College 6-3. MSC's number one singles player Jaco Gerbrands defeated Trevor Prophet 10-7 in a third set super-tiebreak (6-3, 3-6, 10-7). Hernandez and Casson won at number three and six singles respectively. Each won in third set super-tiebreaks. Hernandez posted a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-2 win and Casson won 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
Next up for the Mavericks is a trip to Kearney, Nebraska to play regional opponents; St. Cloud State, Rockhurst and Minnesota Mankato.
