Mavs post 5-2 recond on spring break trip

Improve to 12-6 overall

Mesa State women's tennis team posted a 5-2 overall record on their annual spring break trip to Arizona.

MSC traveled to Palm Desert, California before heading to Phoenix to take on Westmont College of Santa Barbara. Westmont, an NAIA school is ranked #25 in the latest NAIA poll. The Mavericks defeated WC 5-4 by splitting the six singles matches and taking 2 of 3 doubles contests.

Grand Canyon University defeated the Mavs 8-1 to start the first of six Phoenix matches. Victoria Sargent won a third set super-tiebreak at number two singles for the lone point. The Antelopes won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets and swept the three doubles matches.

Wednesday afternoon (3/16) after the loss at Grand Canyon the Mavs answered back with a sweep over Mesa Community College 9-0. MSC allowed just 10 games in 12 sets, soundly defeating their opponent.

MSC's doubleheader on Thursday (3/17) resulting in a 9-0 and 5-4 win over Roger Williams University and College of Saint Benedict respectively. The Mavericks won all six singles matches in straight sets over RWU in the morning match.

Against College of Saint Benedict (MN) the Mavs' number two doubles team of Kelleen Sera and Kaitlan Sera won the deciding match 8-5 to clinch the dual victory. MSC won the top four singles matches and the Sera's win at #2 doubles extended the teams' streak to three.

In the final day of play on Friday the Mavs split a pair of duals; beating Connecticut College 7-2 before falling to Eastern Arizona 3-6. MSC swept the doubles action versus CC and won four of the six singles matches for the win.

Eastern Arizona used a strong singles lineup to take the top five singles matches all in straight sets. MSC's number two and three doubles teams won and Cyndle Curfman defeated her opponent at number six singles.

Victoria Sargent and Kaitlan Sera each went 5-2 overall in singles. Sargent won 4 of 5 matches in straight sets and defeated Grand Canyon's number two singles player in a third set super-tiebreak. The doubles team of Sera and Sera went 6-1 at number two doubles, falling to Grand Canyon University.

MSC will travel to Kearney, Nebraska this weekend to play regional opponents: St. Cloud State, Rockhurst and Mankato State.
