Mavs split Sunday’s DH at Chadron

Mesa State improved to 10-7 overall and 8-4 in league action taking 3 of 4 games at Chadron State.

The Mavericks won game one 10-1 behind Lauren Cross' 4 for 4 from the plate and four RBI. Mavs registered 13 hits and scored at least one run in five of the seven innings. Sara Jordan picked up win number six (6-1) pitching a complete game allowing one run on 11 hits, striking out four.

The win was the Mavs' third consecutive victory and longest win streak to date.

Chadron State turned the tables on the Mavericks in the final game of the four game series winning 7-6 and snapping MSC's win streak.

The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off two homeruns, including a three-run blast with two outs.  Chadron extended the lead to 7-1 after four innings.

MSC's rally started in the sixth inning scoring three runs to pull to within 7-4. Cross hit a homerun to left center with one out. After consecutive singles by Megan Smith and Lisa Pille the Mavs pinch runner Windi Serrano and Pille stole second and third base respectively. Lita Romero single through the right side scored Serrano and Pille. CSC closed out the inning on a fly-out.

After a scoreless sixth for the Eagles the Mavs opened the seventh inning with a foul-out. Jordan walked and Cross hit her second homerun in the game; a two-run blast to right center to cut the deficit to one run (6-7). The Eagles held on for the victory with back-to-back fly-outs to end the game.

MSC out-hit the Eagles 12-8 but left seven runners on base. Ashley Pulido started the game allowing six runs on five hits in 2.0 innings. Jordan came on in relief going 6.1 innings. Pulido was credited with the loss.

Jordan, Cross and Romero had two hits each and combined for three runs and six RBI.

Mesa State will host Neb.-Kearney at Bergman Field in a scheduled doubleheader Saturday at Noon. The two teams will play two on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
