Game Two Box

Mesa State scored 13 runs in each game while sweeping Chadron State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference double-header in Chadron on Saturday.

The Mavericks won the first game 13-3 and took the second contest 13-6. Now 9-6 for the second and 7-3 in the conference, the Mavs outhit the Eagles 29-12 in the twin-bill. CSC is now 5-10 and 4-6.

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning of the opener. A two-run double by Megan Smith was the big hit for Mesa while Chadron State scored its runs on a two-run homer by Katie Bolin and a solo shot by Jamie Mazankowski.

Chadron State never got another runner past second base the remainder of the game while the Mavericks scored a lone run in the second, six in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to conclude the contest.

Smith and Gabriella Parra each had three hits for Mesa State to lead the Colorado team's 15-hit attack. Both Smith and Lauren Cross homered for the Mavericks.

Meanwhile, Mesa State ace Sara Jordan gave up just one more hit after Bolin and Mazankowski  belted their back-to-back home runs to earn her fifth  victory of the season.

In the second game, both teams scored twice in the first frame. Mesa State got its runs on Parra's homer over the left field fence while Katelyn McBeth's line drive down the right field line drove in Chadron State's runs.

The Mavericks went ahead 4-2 in the second inning on two singles and an infield out and stretched the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth on Shannon McClenahan's two-run shot over the right centerfield fence.

The Eagles got two runs in the fourth on back-to-back solo homers by Amy Schartz and Katie Londo and tied the score in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run blast by Mazankowski

Mesa State wrapped of the contest in the top of the sixth with a seven-run uprising that featured six hits,  including a two-run homer by Lisa Pille. Thirteen batters went to the plate for the visitors in the inning.

Parra, Smith and Pille each collected three hits for the Mavericks, who finished with 14 hits. Chadron State collected nine hits in the nightcap, two of them by Katelyn McBeth.

Parra, a senior centerfielder, drove in four runs in each game.

Ashley Pulido, who entered the game in the fourth, went the rest of the way to pick up the victory in the circle for Mesa State.

There was an oddity in the third inning of the second game, when Chadron State pulled off a triple play.  The first Mesa State two batters singled and were on first and second when Lauren Cross hit a high popup just in front of the plate. The umpire called Cross out on the infield fly rule, but Chadron catcher Angela Jay did not catch the ball. When the ball fell to the ground, both Mesa State runners took off. Jay picked up the ball and chased the lead runner back toward second, where, after a couple of throws to infielders, she was tagged out.  The ball again fell to the ground and the other Mesa runner left second base momentarily and also was tagged out.

The teams will play another double-header today (Sunday), starting at 11 a.m.
