Mesa State women's lacrosse made its home debut Friday afternoon at Walker Field hosting Lindenwood University in the first ever women's home lacrosse game in school history. The Mavs fell to the Lions 17-12 in a game that had four lead changes and six ties.
Mesa State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game off goals by Tayler Lansdown, Alexis Rawlings and two by Allie Henderson. Lansdown scored the first home goal in MSC history just 2:15 in to the game off an assist by Maria Heilner.
Lindenwood went on a run scoring five consecutive goals for a 5-4 lead. MSC tied the game at 5-5 with 12:09 remaining in the first period on a goal by Amanda Simon. LU quickly took back the lead 34 seconds later on an unassisted goal by Kara Cashen. Again the Mavericks tied the game (6-6) on Rawlings second goal of the period. The Lions' Kathyrn St. George scored to make it 7-6 and MSC's Simon scored to tie the game at half, 7-7 on a goal with 3:25 left in the first half.
Lindenwood scored quickly to open the second period for an 8-7 lead. MSC scored the next two goals; Lansdown off an assist by Simon (24:12) and Rawlings off an assist by Henderson and the Mavs led 9-8 with 23:26 left in the game.
The Lions then went on a three-goal rally to take an 11-9 lead. MSC's Maria Heilner scored to pull to within 10-11. Nine second later the Lions answered for a 12-10 lead. MSC's Henderson cut the lead in half with her third goal of the game (11-12).
The Lions again went on a four-goal rally and a 16-11 lead with 5:02 remaining in the game. MSC's Rawlings scored the final goal for the Mavs at the 2:29 mark. Lindenwood closed out the game with a goal (1:31) and a 17-12 victory.
The two teams played two weeks ago in St. Charles, MO in the Mavs first-ever lacrosse match and fell to the Lions 18-3. Two weeks later the Mavericks dropped a 17-12 contest.
Lindenwood tallied 41 shots to the Mavs 20; holding MSC to six shots in the second period.
MSC goalkeeper Lauren Wells registered 16 saves.
Rawlings led the Mavs with four goals and Henderson notched three in the contest. Simon and Lansdown each had two and Heilner scored her first goal of the season.
MSC will travel to Colorado Springs Tuesday for a matchup with Millsaps College before returning home to host Regis University on Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m.
