Mountaineers Top Mavericks

                A crowd of 1,025 were on hand to see the Mesa State wrestling team square off with the 13th ranked Western State Mountaineers tonight at Brownson Arena. Mesa State lost the first four bouts but  answered back winning the next three bouts by decision. Western State won two of the next three bouts to win the dual 27-15.

                At 125 pounds, the Mavericks Daniel Romero (Carlsbad, Calif.) surrendered a late takedown to Kyle O'Brien of Western State and lost 5-3.

                At 133 and 141 pounds, Western State received six point wins including a forfeit at 141 pounds.

                From 157 to 174, Mesa State won all those by decision including Dylan Granard's (Woodinville, Wash) 25th win of the season, a 6-2 decision over Zack Frazier. At 157 pounds, Jon Gappmaier (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored a takedown with one second left to score a 5-4 decision over previously ranked Justin Morris.

                Kyle Brightman's (Cheyenne, Wyo.) nine match win streak came to an end. 2nd ranked Charlie Pipher of Western State defeated Brightman 11-1.

                Mesa State's final win came at 285 pounds when Trevor Stapp (Tempe, Ariz.) received a forfeit.

                With the loss, the Mavericks dual record drops to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the RMAC.

                The Mavericks will be back in action next Wednesday as they will take on the Grand Canyon Lopes and Ft. Hays State Tigers. Action will begin at 5:00pm on Wednesday.
