Mesa State (5-4, 3-1) split today's doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands., each being decided by the run-rule. The Cowgirls won 11-3 (six innings) in game one and MSC bounced back with a 12-1 (five inning) victory.
NMHU scored at least one run in four of the six innings and held an 8-2 lead after three. The Cowgirls put up five runs in the second on four hits and one MSC error. Mesa State scored a run in the fifth and in the bottom of the sixth allowed three NMHU runs, ending the game.
Sara Jordan took the loss allowing 11 runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings of action. Jordan walked five and struck out three.
MSC registered three runs on five hits. Jordan went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI. Shannon McClenahan knocked in two runs going 1 for 3. Gabriella Parra and Lisa Pille had one hit each.
In the final game of the series Parra and Lauren Cross led the way with five hits, four runs and eight RBI. Lisa Pille hit a grand slam in the third inning to help give the Mavs a 6-0 lead through three. MSC put up three runs in the fourth and fifth earning them the series victory.
Cross' three-run home run in the fourth scored Parra and Jordan. Parra's double down the left field line scored three in the fifth.
Eight Mavs yielded at least one hit in the game for a total of 11 hits, 12 runs and just two strike outs in 28 at bats.
Sam Farris (3-1) picked up win number three in the complete game victory. Farris allowed one run on four hits, three walks and one strike out.
MSC will open up at home this weekend versus UC-Colorado Springs. Saturday's doubleheader is set for Noon. First pitch Sunday is set for 11 a.m.
