Gabriella Parra and Lauren Cross combined for five hits and four RBI in game one of a doubleheader. MSC beat New Mexico Highlands 4-1 and 6-4 in opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. Cross had a two-run double and registered a triple going 2 for 3 in game one.
MSC scored one run in the first inning and put up three in the third on eight hits. NMHU scored just one run in the bottom of the seventh and tallied six hits.
Sara Jordan picked up win number two (2-1) going seven innings and allowing one run on six hits. Jordan walked three and struck out two Cowgirls.
In game two MSC jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings scoring one in the first and four runs in the third inning. Sara Jordan's RBI single up the middle scored Lita Romero in the first.
In the third inning MSC scored on six hits; an RBI single by Jordan to score Parra. Parra had doubled to left center. Cross, Lisa Pille, Shannon McClenahan and Gross each singled capping the four-run inning.
Highlands' threat came in the fourth when the Cowgirls scored four runs on five hits and stranded three runners. Ashley Pulido came on in relief for starter Sam Farris to close out the inning and help hold the Mavs lead 5-4.
MSC's insurance run came in the seventh as Parra started the inning with a lead-off triple to right center. Two batters later, Megan Smith's double scored Parra for a 6-4 lead.
Smith went 3 for 4 with two RBI and one run. Parra went 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Farris picked up her second win (2-1) and Pulido her first save.
The two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
