Mavs Beat Western in overtime, 77-74

Mesa State held off Western State defeating the Mountaineers 77-74 in overtime Saturday night in Gunnison.

 

MSC out-scored WSC 7-4 in the extra period after the Mountaineers tied the game on a 3-pointer as time expired. The Mavericks went ahead 70-67 on a free throw by Sharaya Selsor before WSC's Brooke Pendergraft hit the shot to tie the game at 70 and send it in to overtime.

 

Selsor hit a trey to open the overtime period as the Mavs went on to defeat Western State and improve to 16-8 overall and 13-7 in league action.

 

MSC trailed 30-26 at half and went on a 7-0 run to take the first lead 35-34) in the second half following a lay-up by Hanna Bowden. MSC lead by as many as 10 points with 3:15 remaining in regulation. The Mountaineers went on a 10-1 run to pull to within one point (65-66) with 48 seconds left in the game. Kelsey Sigl's layup and free throw pushed the lead back to four points (69-65) with 22 second remaining. A lay-up by Pendergraft made it 67-69 and Selsor's hit 1 of 2 free throws for the 3-point lead. Pendergraft tied it on a trey at the buzzer.

 

Sharaya Selsor led the Mavs with 16 points. Sigl added 14 points and Tara Gehring had 10 points off the bench.

 

MSC was out-rebounded by WSC 40-32 as the Mountaineers were led by Katie Hall's 22 points and 13 rebounds.

 

MSC will close out the regular season this week at home versus Adams State on Friday and Fort Lewis on Saturday night. Game time Friday is 6 p.m. Saturday night is senior night as Katie Brady  and Jocelyn Zarling will be honored in between the women's and men's game. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. on Saturday.
