Season Ends in Overtime Loss at Chadron 24-17

Colorado Mesa University (4-7, 3-6 RMAC) dropped their final regular season game Saturday afternoon falling in overtime at Chadron State (6-5, 6-3 RMAC) 24-17.

CMU scored the only touchdown of the first half on a Steve Romero to Jake Cimolino 20-yard touchdown with 10:00 remaining in the second quarter. The Mavericks score was set up by the defense. Domonique Lewis sacked Brandon Gorsuch forcing a fumble and Justin Brown recovered it on the Chadron 31-yard line. Five plays later CMU scored for a 7-0 lead.

Chadron opened the second half holding the Mavs to a three-and-out after the Mavs recovered an on-side kick to start the third quarter. The Eagles drove 84 yards on five plays to tie the score at 7-7, on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Gorsuch to Jeff Alcorn.

CSC stopped the Mavs on the next offensive series, forcing CMU to punt from its own 5-yard line. Chadron's drive started on the CMU44 yard line. The Eagles drove to the CMU 23 before settling for a 40-yard field goal and a 10-7 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff Trent deBraga returned the ball 80 yards to the Chadron 20-yard line. CMU drove to the Eagle 5-yard line before stalling, settling for a 23-yard field goal by Caleb Pavy and a 10-10 tie.

Chardon's next drive resulted in an interception by Trevor deBraga who returned the ball 19 yards to the CMU 43 yard line. The Mavs drove down the Eagles' 19 as the third quarter came to a close. Two plays later on fourth-and-three' CMU's 29-yard field goal was blocked.

CSC took over on their own 20 and drove 80 yards in nine plays scoring on a 1-yard run by Allan Schmaltz. With 9:19 remaining in regulation the Eagles led 17-10.

CMU answered back with the help of a 39-yard kick return by Trent deBraga to the Chadron 42-yard line. On second-and-18, Robert Felberg stepped in and completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Neville to tie the game at 17-17.

Chadron failed on two possessions and the Mavs failed to score on their one possession, sending the game in to overtime.

CMU won the toss and elected to play defense. Chadron's first two run plays moved the ball to the CMU 5-yard line. On third-and-goal Gorsuch completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Alcorn and a 24-17 lead.

The Mavericks possession started with a loss of three yards rushing followed by three incomplete passes.

Chadron State rushed for 174 yards and passed for 243 in the contest. CMU rushed for 79 yards and threw for 124 yards. The Eagles were 3-of-4 in the Red-Zone, while CMU converted 2-of-4 Red-Zone opportunities.

Jake Cimolino rushed for 57 net yards, falling just short of 1,000-yard season, with 974 total yards.  Romero finished 9-for-25 for 89 yards and one touchdown. Trent deBraga finished with 119 kick return yards.

Trevor deBraga led the defense with 11 tackles and tied for a team high eight solo tackles with Chad Benkelman. deBraga had one interception and one breakup. Tanner Ridgway finished his final game as a Mav with 10 tackles, seven solo.
