The Maverick Wrestling team competed in the Tracy Borah Duals on Saturday in Gunnison, Colo. Mesa State fell to 14th ranked Findlay of Ohio, 22-21 before handling Western Wyoming 44-6 and Air Force 34-12. The Mavericks dual record improved to 3-4 with the two wins.
In the match with #14 Findlay, the Roughnecks won six of the ten matches but only one came by fall. Mesa State picked up three wins by fall and one by decision but fell 22-21 in the dual. The Mavericks led the dual heading into the final match at 285. Findlay's Matthew Clum won a 9-3 decision over
Trevor Stapp for the win. Mesa State got wins from
Bery Tack (Cheyenne, Wyo.) at 141,
Jon Gappmaier (Salt Lake City, Utah) at 157,
Kyle Brightman (Cheyenne, Wyo.) at 184 and
Shane Miller (Gardnersville, Nev.) at 197. Findlay's three ranked wrestlers all picked up wins for the Roughnecks.
Against Western Wyoming the Mavericks never trailed and routed the Mustangs 44-6. Mesa State won eight of the ten matches with three coming by pin and one be technical fall.
Jon Gappmaier,
Dylan Granard (Woodinville, Wash.), and
Kory Kennedy (Paonia, Colo.) picked up wins by fall. At 184 pounds,
Kyle Brightman picked up a technical fall, winning the match 24-6.
In the day's final dual against Division I Air Force, Mesa State once again won eight of the ten matches en route to a 34-12 win.
Tyler Nelson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.),
Kyle Brightman, and
Trevor Stapp (Tempe, Ariz.) all picked up wins by fall.
On the weekend,
Jon Gappmaier at 157 pounds went 3-0 with two wins coming by fall.
Kyle Brightman also went 3-0 with one win coming by pin and one by technical fall.
The Mavericks have three duals on the road this week before returning home for their home opener Sunday against Colorado Mines. In the road duals, Mesa State will take on CSU-Pueblo (Wednesday), Adams State (Thursday), and N.M. Highlands (Friday).
