The Mesa State Women's Soccer team finished the weekend 0-1-1 in St. George, Utah this past weekend. The Mavericks lost to the host Dixie State Red Storm 2-1 on Thursday before tying the Wildcats of Central Washington 1-1 on Saturday.
All goals scored in the Dixie State matchup happened in a 7 minute stretch in the middle of the match. Mesa State got the scoring going in the 43rd minute when newcomer Jr. Kelly Parkhurst (Escondido, Calif.) tallied her first goal of the season to put the Mavericks on top 1-0. Parkhurst's unassisted goal came from about 27 yards out.
Unfortunately, the scoring ended there for the Mavs.The Red Storm would get goals in the 44th minute from Jordyn Hutchinson and right after halftime in the 49th minute from Erin Beeston to seal the victory 2-1 for the Red Storm.
Sr. Goalkeeper Alicia Kahler (Spokane, Wash.) made 5 saves in the loss.
In Saturday's match with Central Washington, the Mavericks and the Wildcats battled to a 1-1 tie. Central Washington got on the board first, right before halftime, in the 42nd minute. Wildcat Brittany Franks scored on a crossing pass from Kaycie Hutchins to put them ahead 1-0.
The Mavericks would get the equalizer in the 55th minute. Junior Sophia Whigham (Tucson, Ariz.) would score her first goal as a Maverick which evened the score at one a piece. Whigham received a rebound from the goalie and scored from 5 yards out.
Alicia Kahler would get the tie in goal for the Mavericks. Kahler made 6 saves in the match.
Mesa State now sits at 2-1-1 on the season and will start RMAC play next weekend.
The Mavericks will be on the road again this week. Mesa State will play at Nebraska-Kearney on Friday before heading back to Denver to take on the Regis Rangers on Sunday. The Mavericks home opener will be on Wednesday September 22nd as they take on the Ft. Lewis Skyhawks.
