Mavericks Draw with First-Place Rangers

DENVER, Colo.- Facing the top team in the RMAC, the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against the Regis Rangers. This is the second draw of conference play for the Mavs while the Rangers got their first draw this season.

The first half began in favor of the Mavs as Olivia Bariao-Arce took the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, but it was saved by goalkeeper Helen Stegner.

The Rangers responded in a big way 47 seconds later as their first shot resulted in the first goal of the contest, putting them in front before the ten-minute mark.

Ellie Duncan attempted a response a minute later, but her chance was again stopped by Stegner.

Bariao-Arce and Sarah Dunn attempted two more shots, but both were dealt with by the Rangers' defense. The Mavs didn't stop their attack as they earned a corner kick just before the 18th minute.

A high ball was played into the box by Olivia Barrett, where Angelina Kazinec headed it towards the right goalpost. Duncan was able to get under it and just slip the ball past Stegner to level the game at one a piece.

No shots flew until the 29th minute when Regis got a chance on goal, but it sailed too high. They got another one in the 36th minute, but it was saved by Keely Wieczorek.

Katelyn Romano and Jenelle Arenibas got shots off in the final five minutes of the half but fell short as both teams remained level going into halftime.

Regis tried to start the second half off with a bang, but their shot missed the right goal post.

Katie Lozano-Monjaraz and Bariao-Arce both had golden chances for a goal in the 48th minute, but they were both saved by new goalkeeper Maddie Payne.

Lozano-Monjaraz kept Payne busy with another shot in the 54th minute, but Payne was able to stop it yet again.

Both teams traded missed shots during the hour mark with Parker Mairs getting the best look at goal, but it was saved again by Payne.

Brooklyn Baird, Duncan and Dunn all had chances, but it didn't amount to any goals. Regis fired two shots of their own, but both were snuffed out by the Mavs defense.

The Rangers found a prime opportunity to take the lead when Paula Igual was left wide open in the box, but her header missed the mark.

They continued to go on the offensive when the last five minutes rolled around and fired two more shots on target; both were saved by Wieczorek.

Both teams fired shots off in the few remaining seconds, but they came up empty as the game ended 1-1.

CMU outshot the Rangers 16-13 while Duncan scored her seventh goal of the season. Barrett collected her third assist and Kazinec her first. Wieczorek wrapped up her day with three saves.

The Mavs return home to wrap up the regular season against Westminster on Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Community Hospital Unity Field.
