Mesa State Mavericks upended the number fourth ranked team in Division II softball and No. 1 in the Central Region, Metro State Roadrunners on their home field Friday morning 5-1. MSC and Regis University are the only undefeated teams in the double elimination RMAC post season tournament hosted by Metro State College. MSC and RU will play Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Sara Jordan pitched a complete game picking up her 13th win on the year, allowing just five hits, one base on balls and struck out nine Roadrunners. Jordan was one of two players to go 2-for-4 from the plate and scored one run.
Gabi Parra got the Mavericks started after the Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Parra led off the sixth inning with a homerun to centerfield and finished the day 2-for-4. Parra's homerun is her 11th of the year and leads the Mavs in that category. Jordan followed up with a single thru the right side. Freshman Megan Smith stepped up and hit her sixth homerun of the year over the right field fence to give the Mavs a 3-1 lead. Whitney Bailey's single up the middle kept the momentum going. JJ Johnson stepped in to pinch run for Bailey and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ashlee Duffy then singled to left field and Johnson scored to make it 4-1. Taylor Gross entered the game to pinch run for Duffy and Lisa Pille laid down a sac bunt to advance Gross to second. Lita Romero's double down the left field line knocked in Gross and the Mavs led 5-1. Following a hit batter (Dani Vallie) the Roadrunners were finally able to close out the inning with a strike out and a line out.
Jordan sent down the next four consecutive batters before allowing a single in the seventh with one out. The next two Roadrunners flied out and the Mavericks sealed the victory and handed Metro just its fourth loss this season (41-4).
Metro's Christie Robinson suffered just her second loss of the year (19-2).
