Mavs close out regular season

Split series at Adams State

Mesa State softball team closed out the 2010 regular season with a series split at Adams State. The Grizzlies swept Saturday's doubleheader 11-10 and 16-8. Sunday the Mavs bounced back with a 15-3 and 14-12 doubleheader sweep. MSC wrapped up the regular season 20-18 overall and 18-18 in league play. MSC will enter the RMAC tournament as the #4 seed and play #5 seed Colorado School of Mines on Thursday, 9:30 a.m. in Denver. RMAC regular season champion Metro State will host the three-day tournament, May 6-8.

 

Sunday's DH sweep started with a 15-3, six inning victory, after the Mavs scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to pull away from the Grizzlies. MSC had 10 hits in the game including Whitney Bailey's 5-for-5 from the plate.

 

Sara Jordan picked up her tenth victory of the year allowing three run on 10 hits. She struck out five batters.

 

In the series finale MSC came from behind for a 14-12 victory and salvage a series split. MSC scored five runs in the fourth to take a 10-9 lead. The Grizzlies scored nine runs in the third, erasing a 5-0 MSC lead. ASC took back the lead in the fifth scoring three runs for a 12-10 advantage.  Whitney Bailey's two-run home run in the sixth tied the game at 12-12.  MSC's two runs in the seventh sealed the win and pushed the Mavs to an 18-18 league record. MSC ends the regular season 20-18.

 

In game one of the series Adams survived a late inning scare as the Grizzlies held an 11-8 margin heading in to the seventh. MSC pulled to within 10-11 on back-to-back doubles by Lita Romero and Dani Vallie. Gabi Parra's single with two outs scored Vallie. ASC registered the final out to secure the win.

 

The two teams combined for 25 hits, 12 extra base hits, and 18 runners left on base.  

 

Game two of the series MSC raced out to an 8-0 lead after the top of the second. The Mavericks scored eight runs on four hits (1 error) including a three-run homerun by Gabi Parra.

 

Adams tied the game with two runs in the second and a six in the third on 11 hits (1 error). The Grizzlies went on to score eight runs in the fifth and a 16-8 lead, ending the game on the run-rule. ASC scored eight runs on six hits (2 errors) in the fifth. MSC registered just three hits after their eight-run second inning.
