Katie Mitchell's grand slam in game one of Sunday erased a 6-2 deficit as the Mavericks (10-12, 8-12) went on to win 10-7 over CSU-Pueblo (16-10, 12-8) in the Third Annual Swing for Life game, benefiting breast cancer awareness.
MSC tied the game at 6-6 on the grand slam in the fifth inning and took the led in the sixth scoring four runs on five hits for a 10-6 lead. CSU-P scored one run in the seventh to pull to within 7-10.
Mitchell and Lita Romera had three hits each in the game. Mitchell went 3-for-3 with five RBI. MSC tallied 16 hits including multiple hits by Whitney Bailey (2), Megan Smith (2) and Sara Jordan (2).
Jordan picked up her fourth win allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out three.
In the series finale CSU-P scored four runs in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie for the 5-1 victory.
CSU-P's Justine Bosio's two-out three run home run helped the ThunderWolves secure the series split.
MSC recorded 10 hits yet stranded 10 runners. Whitney Bailey's single to center field in the sixth knocked in the Mavs only run in the game.
Freshman Wailana Borrero allowed five runs on 11 hits for the Mavericks.
Swing for Life foundation and MSC alum Ms. Kathy Howa was on hand for the benefit game. Howa threw out the ceremonial first pitch to fellow cancer survivor and assistant MSC coach, Jim Hazelhurst. The crowd of 132 helped contribute to a record $2,390 raised for the foundation.
MSC opened the series Friday with a 2-1 win. Sara Jordan gave up just one run on five hits. MSC had seven hits with Gabi Parra and Lisa Pille recording two hits each.
In game two Friday CSU-P scored three runs in the first, second and sixth inning posting a 9-4 victory.
MSC will travel to Las Vegas, New Mexico for a four game series with New Mexico Highlands beginning Saturday at Noon.
