Mavs close out regular home season winning 3-of-4 from WNMU

Mavs split Sunday’s DH with Mustangs

L 9-4, W 5-4

Mesa State took 3-of-4 from visiting Western New Mexico, splitting Sunday's doubleheader, in the Mavs final regular season home series.

In the series finale the Mavs took a 3-0 lead in the third and held a 4-2 lead after five innings. The Mustangs tied the game a 4-4 scoring two runs in the top of the sixth. WNMU led off the inning with back-to-back doubles. The tying run scored on a wild pitch with one out. MSC got out of the inning on a pop up to the shortstop and a line out to the first baseman to end the inning.

MSC scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Lisa Pille, scoring pinch runner Windi Serrano. Serrano ran for Whitney Bailey who singled to start the inning.

Starting pitcher Wailana Borrero picked up her second win of the year (2-1) allowing four runs (3 earned) on four hits in 6.0 innings. Cierra Lard picked up her first save of the year closing out the seventh inning.

Game one the Mustangs took a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Mavs scored two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull to within 4-5. WNMU put the game away in the seventh scoring four runs on four hits and one MSC error.  

MSC registered eight hits including multiple hits from Dani Vallie and Sara Jordan. Jordan's two-run homerun in the fifth scored Gabi Parra who reached on a double to left field.

In the sixth the Mavs' Lita Romero reached on a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home. Vallie walked and stole second when Romero stole home. Valli stole third and scored on a passed ball for the Mavs fourth run of the game.

WNMU had 13 hits including five extra base hits. The two teams stranded a combined 23 runners (WNMU-11, MSC-12).

Jordan took the loss for the Mavs and Arriel Smith improved to 7-0 for the Mustangs. Emily Huhta was credited with her sixth save.

MSC will travel to Adams State this weekend closing out the regular season in a four game series with the Grizzlies.
