Mesa State softball team took 3 of 4 this weekend at New Mexico Highlands improving their record to 13-13 overall and 11-13 in RMAC action.
After dropping game one of the series Saturday morning 4-0, the Mavericks closed out the next three games outscoring the Cowgirls 20-8 including a complete game shutout by Sara Jordan Sunday morning.
Highlands opened the series with a 3-0 shutout allowing the Mavericks just one hit and the Cowgirls starter striking out 11 MSC batters. NMHU scored their three runs in the sixth inning on a two-out 3-run RBI double up the middle by R. Avalos.
MSC scored 11 runs on 12 hits in game two, scoring at least one run in all but the sixth inning. Cierra Lard pitched six innings of relief, picking up her sixth win of the year. Dani Valli, Lita Romero and Megan Smith had two hits each and combined for 7 runs and 3 RBI.
Sunday morning starter Sara Jordan pitched a complete game shutout in a 4-0 victory. Jordan allowed just three hits and struck out four. MSC had five hits in the game, including a two-run homerun by Jordan in the fourth. In the fifth inning Jordan's double to right center knocked in two more runs for the Mavs.
In the series finale Cierra Lard picked up her seventh win of the year and second in the series allowing two runs on seven hits. Megan Smith went 3 for 4 from the plate for eight of the Mavs hits. Ashlee Duffy and Gabi Parra combined for two hits and four RBI.
MSC will host Colorado School of Mines Friday in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The Mavs will play UC-Colorado Springs Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. MSC is hosting a four-team pod Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bergman Field.
