Softball earns split at Regis

L 7-5, W 9-5

Mesa State (7-9, 5-9) and Regis University (5-19, 2-16) split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Regis Field. The Rangers won game on 7-5 and the Mavericks bounced back with a 9-5 victory in game two.

MSC held a 5-0 lead in to the fifth inning when the Rangers scored six runs on five hits to take a 6-5 lead. Regis scored an insurance run in the sixth scoring on a fielding error to take a 7-5 lead, holding on for their second conference win of the season.

 Dani Valli and Lisa Pille led the team with two hits each and combined for three runs. Sara Jordan was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI. Jordan pitched 4.0 innings allowing six runs (5 earned) on eight hits, striking out three. Taylor Gross pitched the final two innings allowing one run on two hits.

 Regis tallied 10 hits with five Rangers recording multiple hits.

 In game two MSC jumped out to a 5-2 lead after three innings helped along by a three-run homerun by Lisa Pille in the second inning. MSC extended the lead to 7-1 after four, when the Rangers cut in to the lead scoring three run in the bottom of the fourth (5-7). Sara Jordan's two-out two-run homerun in the fifth pushed the Mav lead to 9-5.

Starter Cierra Lard shut down the Rangers in the final three innings allowing just three hits, no runs, for the victory. Lard gave up five runs on 12 hits, striking out two.

 The two teams will wrap up the four game series with a doubleheader Monday beginning at 11 a.m.
