The Mesa State Mavericks squared off with the 16th ranked Grizzlies of Adams State at Brownson Arena. The Grizzlies would flex there muscles for a 29-9 RMAC Dual win. Here is a rundown of how the night went down:
At 125 pounds, Mesa State's Tyler Nelson went toe-to-toe with 3rd ranked and defending National Champion Arsenia Barksdale. Barksdale worked Nelson all three rounds to pick up the win for the Grizzlies. Barksdale came away with the win 16-1 to give the Grizzlies the early lead 5-0. Barksdale is now 15-5 on the season while Nelson falls to 12-13.
The 133 pound weight class saw former Rio Rancho High School teammates square off with Maverick Chris Rubalcaba and Grizzly Dominic Valencia. The match found its way to overtime where Valencia got a takedown in the first 15 seconds into the overtime period for the win. Adams now had a 8-0 lead in the dual.
141 pounds saw the #1 ranked Grizzly Josh Hensley and Maverick Freshman Trevor Donarski. Donarski wasnt phased by the nationally ranked Hensley early as each wrestler looked for control. Hensley controlled Donarski for the whole match after that. Hensley went on to the technical fall 16-1 at 6:32. Hensley os now 23-3 on the season while Donarski is now 16-10. Adams then led the dual 13-0.
At 149 pounds, Mesa's Tyler Juby squared off with Daniel Kelly. After two periods, Kelly led Juby 7-3 and Juby chose neutral. Kelly took Juby down for a 9-3 lead and never looked back. Kelly would add a riding point for the 10-3 victory and the dual lead of 16-0. Kelly is now 19-6 on the season while Juby fell to 10-6.
Two Nationally Ranked wrestlers squared off at 157 pounds with #6 Maverick Chase Walker and #5 Grizzly Joey Deaguero. They were scoreless after the first period. Walker chose down to start the second period and worked an escape 53 seconds into the round. Deaguero chose down to start the thrid period. Deaguero got a reversal about 20 seconds into the round to force for a 2-1 lead. Walker got a reversal with 56 seconds left in round for a 3-2 lead. Deaguero scored a reversal with 8 seconds left in the match for the win 4-3. Joey Deaguero is now 19-8 on the season while Chase Walker is now 15-6. Adams extended its match lead to 19-0.
At 165 pounds, Maverick senior Cole Johnson grappled with Grizzly Anthony Gomez. They two were scoreless after the first. Gomez would choose down and Johnson would work a nearfall with 20 seconds left in the round for a 2-0 lead. Johnson chose top to start the third round. Johnson rode Gomez out in the third for a 3-0 win. Cole Johnson is now 4-7 and Gomez falls to 1-10. Adams still led the dual 19-3.
Mesa State would receive a forfeit at 174 pounds so the dual lead was cut to 19-9.
Maverick Chris Cielinski and Grizzly Torben Walters would duke it out at 184. The two would remain scoreless after the first period. Walters chose down while Cielinski would choose an optional start and released him. Walters led 1-0. Walters would score a takedown with 41 seconds left in the period for a 3-0 lead. Cielinski would choose down to start the third period. Walters would ride Cielinski out and add the riding point for a 4-0 victory. Walters' record improves to 14-8 and Cielinski would fall to 3-12. Adams would extend their lead to 22-9.
4th ranked Grizzly Kyle Sand would square off with Maverick Shane Miller at 197 pounds. The first period would end with Sand leading 6-1. Sand would add an escape to start the second round. Miller chose neutral to start the third round and scored an early takedown but that would be all he could muster as Kyle Sand won 16-5. Sand's record improves to 20-6 while Miller fell to 12-14. Adams led then 26-9.
Maverick Trevor Stapp and Grizzly Jeff Schossow would round out the night at 285 pounds. The score would remain 0-0 after the first round. Schossow would chose down to start the second period and would work an escape 5 seconds into the round. The period would end with Schossow leading 1-0. Stapp would choose down to start the third period. Stapp would work an escape 38 seconds into the third round to even the score at 1-1. That would be the score as we headed to overtime. Schossow would work a takedown 45 seconds into the overtime period for the win. Schossow is now 4-9 while Stapp falls to 8-10.
The Mavericks will be back in action on February 12th as they take on CSU-Pueblo on Senior Night.
