Mesa women fall at Western 80-63

Short-handed Mavs drop road game

Mesa State's (8-13, 5-9) two game road streak was snapped Tuesday night at Gunnison in an 80-63 loss to Western State College.

 

The short-handed Mavericks battled the Mountaineers trailing by just four points (35-39) at intermission.

 

MSC stayed close early in the second half before the Mountaineers went on a 14-3 run and a 60-47 lead with 7:50 remaining in regulation. MSC cut the lead to single digits (54-62) on a trey by Hannah Breidel with 5:55 left in the game.

 

Western State answered back with a 10-2 spurt to extend the lead to 16 points on the way to their ninth (9-13) win and seventh (7-7) league victory.

 

Hannah Breidel led all players with 22 points including 5 of 9 from the 3-point line.

 

Courtney McCaig finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Meagan Selvidge added 10 points.

 

Alaina Brennan and Katie Cupp combined for 12 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Brennan grabbed a team high eight boards.

 

WSC had three players in double figures led by Amber Murray's 18 points.

 

MSC will travel to Silver City, NM for a matchup with Western New Mexico Saturday night at 6 p.m.
