Sigl’s 30 leads Mavs to OT win

Mavs beat Highlands 77-73

Mesa State (6-2, 3-1) defeated New Mexico Highlands (3-7, 0-4) in overtime 77-73 Saturday night in Brownson Arena.

Kelsey Sigl scored a career high 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in 38 minutes of play to help the Mavs hold off the Cowgirls. Sigl was one of two players to post a double-double.

Katrina Selsor finished with a team high 11 rebounds and five assists and scored 10 points. Sharaya Selsor posted 11 points and handed out four assists.

MSC held a 32-29 halftime lead and quickly opened up the second half extending the lead to 10 points (41-31). NMHU went on a 13-0 run to take a 46-44 lead with 11:06 remaining in regulation. The score was tied 55-55 at the 6:11 mark when the Mavs went on a 7-0 run and a 62-55 advantage.

The Cowgirls battled back to take a one point lead (68-67) following a 13-6 run in the final minutes of the game. NMHU failed to seal the victory missing three free throws in the final 23 seconds. Highlands led by one point (68-67) with five second left when Sigl headed to the free throw line and missed the first FT, but connected on the second to tie the game at 68-68 and send the game in to overtime.

In the overtime period the Mavericks scored first on a Katrina Selsor layup (70-68) and never trailed in the extra period outscoring the Cowgirls 9-5.

NMHU was led by Whitley Coca's 30 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Lopez finished with 12 points off the bench and Ashley Godfrey added 10 points.

MSC shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the field, while NMHU shot 32.9 percent (23-70). MSC finished 27 of 41 from the foul line and hit just 2 of 14 from the 3-point line. NMHU hit 22 of 26 from the free throw line and made 5 of 19 treys.

Mesa State will travel to Fort Lewis College next Sunday night for a match up with the Skyhawks.
