Grapplers Split at Tracy Borah Duals

The Mesa State Wrestling team competed at the 20th annual Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison over the weekend and came out with a split. The Mavericks have been using the past few weeks to heal up as many of their regular wrestlers have been hampered with injuries. When the RMAC/Super Region 3 Tournament rolls around, they should be at full strength.

The Mavericks dropped the opener at the meet to Division I Air Force 37-15. Mesa State got wins out of Chris Rubalcaba at 133, Chase Walker at 157, and Trevor Stapp at 285.

Chris Rubalcaba scored a fall at 133 pounds over Falcon Derek Gillespie at 4:50. Rubalcaba improved his record to 16-9 with 4 falls.

Chase Walker, ranked 5th at 157 pounds, scored a 3-1 win over Alec Williams of Air Force which cut the Falcon lead to 18-9 in the dual score.

Heavyweight Trevor Stapp got back on the winning track with a 3rd round pin of Falcon Jared Erickson. Stapps record improved to 6-8 with the win.

The second and final dual of the day for the Mavericks was against NJCAA member Western Wyoming. The Mavericks experience showed in the 45-9 win. Mesa State won 8 of the 10 bouts including 4 by forfeit.

Tyler Nelson got the dual off on the right foot with a 3rd round fall of WWCC's Michael Wheat. Nelson's record now sits at 10-12 with 2 falls.

Chase Walker scored his second win of the day as he got the best of Rodney Dollar 7-2. Walker's record on the season is now 14-4 and 47-11 in his career.

Sophomore Justin Grosse scored a hometown fall at 174 pounds over Cole Evans. Grosse, who is from Gunnison, stretched the Maverick lead to 27-9 with his pin. Grosse's record now sits at 7-12 with 6 falls.

Heavyweight Trevor Stapp got his second win and second pin of the day with a fall of WWCC's Rusty Farnsworth in 4:00. Stapp is now 7-8 wih the fall.

The Mavericks are back in action this weekend at home. Mesa State will play host to the Grand Canyon 'Lopes on Friday at 7:00pm and the Chadron State Eagles on Saturday at 7:00pm. Friday Night is also 'Operation White Out' and Saturday is 'Faculty Night'
