Men's Soccer Losses Two in Phoenix

        The Mesa State Men's Soccer team continued its rough stretch of games this past weekend losing to Grand Canyon 3-2 and to Western Washington 3-0.

        Against Grand Canyon, Mesa State got into an early 1-0 hole when the 'Lopes scored in the 2nd minute of the game on a penalty kick.

        Grand Canyon then scored another goal in the 20th minute when GCU player Juan Mendez found the back of the net to give the 'Lopes the halftime lead at 2-0.

        Mesa State cut the lead to 2-1 in the 59th minute when they scored an own goal. Ryan McClanahan (Las Cruces, NM) assisted on the goal when a GCU defender tried booting the ball out of the middle that found his own net. 

        The Mavericks then evened the score at 2-2 when freshman Evans Afriyie (Denver, CO) scored his first collegiate goal. Afriyie scored the unassisted goal in the 82nd minute.

        The 'Lopes scored the golden goal in the 90th minute just before the game ended to give Grand Canyon the 3-2 win.

        The loss dropped the Mavericks record to 0-3-1 while Grand Canyon improved its record to 2-1-1.

        Against Western Washington, the Vikings scored in the 26th minute and never looked back. Western Washington went on to shutout the Mavericks 3-0. 

        The loss dropped Mesa State's record to 0-4-1 on the season going into RMAC play.

        Next weekend Mesa State will face Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Colorado Christian on Sunay to open up RMAC competiton. Both games will be at Walker FIeld.
