Three consecutive doubles to lead off the ninth inning propelled the Mavericks to a 3-1 upset win over Metro State College at the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament Friday afternoon. The Mavs extra-inning victory was the first win over Metro State this season in six meetings.
MSC scored one run in the first inning and the Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the second. The game remained scoreless for six innings until the ninth when MSC took the lead with two runs on three hits. Katie Mitchell, Kristen Silva and Danielle Vallie's consecutive doubles gave the Mavericks a 2-run cushion for starting pitcher Jessica Rayman to close out the ninth.
Rayman's complete game victory was her tenth of the year (10-6). She allowed one run of five hits and struck out six Roadrunners. Rayman and the Mavericks closed out the game on three straight outs.
MSC advances to the semifinals against CSU-Pueblo Saturday at Noon. The T-Wolves beat Colorado Mines 7-1 in the other quarterfinal matchup. Metro and Colorado Mines will play each other in an elimination game Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
