Mesa State men's tennis team in only its second NCAA Division II Regional tournament appearance dropped a 5-2 decision to CSU-Pueblo Thursday afternoon in Denver. The Thunderwolves advance to play host Metro State Friday afternoon in the three team central region bracket.
Junior Jordan Chomko was victorious at No. 1 singles and doubles for the Mavs. Chomko and partner Nick Provenza defeated the T-Wolves number one team 8-2. Chomko posted a straight set victory over Phillip Penkatzki 6-3, 6-0 at No.1 singles.
CSU-Pueblo won two of the three doubles matches, narrowly winning at No. 3 doubles 9-8 (8-6). The T-Wolves clinched the match with victories at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles. Provenza lost a close three set match at No. 3 singles. No. 2 and 6 singles matches were called when CSU-P clinched the team victory.
The winner of the CSU-Pueblo / Metro match will advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament May 13-16 in Florida.
