UC-Colorado Springs' (8-8, 4-4) 5-run seventh inning lifted the Mountain Lions to a 9-7 victory in game one of Monday's doubleheader at Bergman Field. MSC led 5-4 entering the top of the seventh when UCCS scored 5 runs on 3 hits (1 MSC error) to pull ahead 9-5. MSC scored 2 runs in the bottom half on a two out 2-run home run by Gabriella Parra. UCCS ended the rally on a ground out.
In the series finale sophomore Cierra Lard clinched the split in a complete game 6-3 victory. Lard struck out a season high 12 batters in just her second start of the season. Lard allowed 3 runs (2 earned) and 5 walks while facing 33 batters.
Trailing 2-1 the Mavericks scored 4 runs in the third inning for a 5-2 lead. Parra, Lauren Cross and Meagan Hennessy each hit a double knocking in a combined 3 runs. MSC tacked on a run in the fifth and UCCS answered with 1 run in the sixth. Lard closed out the game with two strikeouts and an infield pop-up in the seventh.
The Mavericks will travel to Fort Lewis College for a doubleheader Thursday afternoon. This weekend MSC will play a four game series at Colorado Mines.
