Mesa State softball opened the 2009 home season with a split against UC-Colorado Springs. The four game series has been pushed back to Sunday and Monday due to weather conditions.
Sunday's doubleheader had the Mountain Lions win a 7-5 behind pitcher Sarah McCauley's complete game outing. McCauley allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits, striking out 7 Maverick batters. MSC scored their 5 runs in the first three innings, including a 3-run first inning.
The Mountain Lions took the lead in the fifth inning scoring 3 runs (2 homeruns) for a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish. UCCS's insurance run came in the seventh off the bat of McCauley, her second homerun in the game.
MSC's Danielle Vallie led the Mavs with three hits. Jamie Prather and Gabriella Parra each had two hits.
Game two of the doubleheader MSC scored 4 runs on 3 hits in the fifth inning, earning the Mavs a come-from-behind victory, their first league win of the season. Sara Jordan's two-run homerun lifted the Mavericks to a 6-5 lead. Parra came on in relief of starter Jessica Rayman in the fifth, allowed one run on one hit and three strikeouts.
Jordan went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Parra finished 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring 2 runs.
MSC and UCCS will wrap-up the four game series beginning Monday at 11 a.m.
