Softball Earns Split at Mines

Win 7-3 and 10-9

                Mesa State (9-11, 5-9) swept Sunday's doubleheader at Colorado Mines (17-12, 9-5) winning game one 7-3 and game two 10-9.

                MSC scored all seven runs in the fifth inning erasing a 3-0 lead the Orediggers had built up in the second inning. MSC's seven runs on seven hits began when Danielle Vallie led off the inning reaching base on a fielding error. Two batters later Meagan Hennessy hit a three-run homerun to right field. Stacy Ball's single up the middle scored Windi Serrano. Ashlee Duffy's two-run double gave MSC a 6-3 lead. MSC batted around and Vallie's single drove in a run and a 7-3 Maverick lead.

                Sara Jordan (3-4) came on in relief and pitched 5.2 innings, shutting out the Orediggers (5 hits).

                In game two MSC scored two runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 9-8 Oredigger lead and give the Mavericks a 10-9 victory holding off CSM in the bottom half of the seventh.

                Gabriella Para hit a two-run homerun in the first inning and finished the game going 3 for 5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Sara Jordan hit a grand slam in the fifth inning leading the Mavs to a five run fifth and a tying the score at 7-7. MSC took a one run lead in the sixth and CSM took the lead back in the bottom half with two runs and a 9-8 lead. MSC solidified the Sunday sweep with a rally in the seventh.

                Sara Jordan picked up her second victory of the day, again coming on in relief of starter Parra. Jordan allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings.

                Parra, Jamie Prather and Lita Romero had three hits each.
