Mesa State men's tennis team opened the 2009 spring season with a 5-4 win over Colorado College Saturday evening at the Monaco Club in Denver, Colo. The Mavericks won two of the three doubles matches and split the six singles matches for the 5-4 victory.
Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza defeated the Tigers number one doubles team of Dan Solomon and Nate Burt 8-2. Number 3 doubles, William Kellar and Kevin Nydam won a tight match against Thomas Modern and Sam Barnard, 9-7, to give the Mavs a 2-1 lead heading in to singles action.
MSC's Rashad Khamis (#2), Nick Provenza (#3) and Niko Carrizo (#5) were victorious in their singles matches. Khamis and Provenza won in straight sets and Carrizo won 10-2 in the super tiebreak third set.
Mesa State's number 1 singles player, Chomko, dropped a third set super tiebreak, 10-8, to the Tigers number 1, Dan Solomon. Kevin Nydam (#4) also lost in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (10-5). William Kellar (#6) dropped a three-setter, 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 (10-5).
Mesa State will travel to Phoenix for spring break next week where the Mavericks are scheduled for six dual matches. The Mavericks return to Grand Junction and their first home match on March 17 versus Hastings College.
