Box Score Mesa State women's basketball (1-4, 0-2) dropped a 70-53 contest at Colorado School of Mines (5-2, 2-0) Saturday night in Golden.
The Orediggers jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first 6 ½ minutes and held the Mavs to a 27.3 shooting percentage (6-22) in the first half. CSM held a 34-17 halftime lead shooting 52 percent (13-25) from the floor.
Colorado Mines extended the lead to 21 points early in the second half before the Mavs went on a 22-10 run to pull to within nine points with 7:58 remaining in regulation. CSM went on a run of 16-8 in the final seven minutes to seal the victory. MSC played the Orediggers even in the second half with both teams scoring 36 second half points.
MSC shot 46.2 percent (12-26) in the second half including 3 treys in during the 22-10 run. The much taller Mines team dominated the boards (40-20), including 11 offensive rebounds.
Courtney McCaig led the way for the Mavericks with 12 points. Jocelyn Zarling and Jennifer Landers finished with 10 points each. All seven Maverick players scored at least four points. MSC's eight treys is a team season high.
MSC returns home to host Regis University this Saturday night (7 p.m.) and Metro State on Sunday night (5 p.m.).
