Women's Track & Field

Track & Field Notes from Mines Meet

Highlights

Alexis Skarda won the women's 1500m... this is the first 1500m ever raced by the Mavs, therefore she established a new school record in the process.

Kelsey Follett won the women's 300m

6 School Records set or established for the Mavs in the season opener

Alicia Gieck broke the school record in the 300m dash. The record was previously held by current teammate Andrea Ager (46.99). The freshmen eclipsed the mark by just over 3 seconds running a 43.98 to capture 11th place

Lindsay Hart on her way to an impressive 5th place showing for the freshmen smashes the record in the 60m hurdles running 9.52 to best the 10.52

Michelle Clements broke her own school record in the shot put throwing 37-3 3/4 and established a new mark for the mavs in the weight throw (38-2 1/4) She scored points in both events placing 7th in both

Also jumping on the record breaking wagon was Brooklyn Barton who broke her own mark in the triple jump. She jumped 30-9 1/4

Notable placings

Breanna Jones - 9th place 60m dash

Andrea Ager- 6th place in the 600m run

Jessica Needham - 8th place in shot put

The women's 4x4 raced to 4th place with an all freshmen squad...Alicia Gieck, Sierra Pickslay, Amber Haberman and Breanna Jones. The time of 4:14 currently has this young squad sitting at the number 22 spot in the national rankings (although really its not a big of a deal. It is was to early in the season for that to actually mean something and there are way to many teams that haven't raced!!!!)

Key injuries -

Christina Rino, is out for at least 3 weeks with a partially torn hamstring. The 400m runner was looking forward to running in the relay but injured it in the 60m dash.

Kaela Maynes - has a sprained knee and is also out for the next 3 weeks. The 400/800m runner was also looking forward to her debut in the relay but will have to put that on hold.

Notes from me

I was highly impressed with the showing of the girls at this first meet. A majority of the athletes that we took to the track were freshmen and I was expecting at least a couple of breakdowns in performances. But I didn't see any of that. What I saw is a very competitive group who only had plans of competing the absolute best that they could.

I also believe that it was exactly the learning experience that I had hoped to get. Running on an indoor facility is a million times different than running on an outdoor regulation track... In fact I think the most popular quote from the girls this weekend is that "It's weird, and I don't think I like it."

But now they understand how much more difficult it will be to post fast times on the CSM track which also happens to be the sight for the RMAC Championships. But with continual experience it can be done!

We are idle until Jan 15th at the Air Force Academy. This is hands down the best track facility in the state of Colorado and I know that were are going to be able to go there and post some great times. Unfortunately in the meantime we have a VERY long while until the girls will be able to compete again. However we are going to take the experience from this meet and use it over the next few weeks to continue to strive for our goals.
