Mesa State (8-8, 6-1) volleyball team dropped its first league match and its seven match win streak broke by visiting Colorado School of Mines (12-5, 4-3) Thursday night.
Despite four MSC players in double digit kills the Orediggers recorded 19.5 blocks including 35 block assists. MSC's 64 total kills were overshadowed by 50 errors (.071 %). CSM had 42 kills and 23 errors (.110).
MSC led 2-0 posting identical 25-18 sets. CSM won set three (25-16) and four (26-24) with the Mavericks posting negative hitting percentages in each set, -.031 and -.044 respectively.
The Orediggers closed out the match 16-14 holding off a late surge by the Mavericks. MSC tied the set at 10 each before CSM won four consecutive points (2 kills, 2 MSC hitting errors) for a 14-10 lead. MSC stormed back with 3 kills and one hitting error by the Orediggers to tie the set at 14 each. CSM closed out the match with Tara Schwein's 11th kill of the night and an attack error by the Mavs to close out the match.
MSC tallied 99 digs, 58 assists and four service aces. CSM finished with 65 digs, 36 assists and three service aces. Alisan Tompkins had a game high 17 kills. Mines' Schwein recorded 11 kills and 12 block assists.
MSC will host UC-Colorado Springs (8-6, 3-3) Friday night at 7 p.m.
