#23 Ft. Lewis tops Mavericks

The Mavericks came into Wednesday night's game ranked #8 in the latest NCAA Central Region Rankings and needed a win to climb up into the top six. The top six teams in each of the country's eight regions qualify for the NCAA Playoffs. A win over #23 Ft. Lewis would have helped push the Mavericks into the top six.

The game was still knotted at 0-0 after the first 25 minutes of the game, as both teams were battling for control of the game.

In the 26th minute of the game, Ft. Lewis' Holly Hollenga dished a pass over to Skyhawk Jamie MacArthur who bent a ball into the left side of the goal. It was MacArthur's seventh goal of the season and gave Ft.Lewis the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later in the 31st minute, the Skyhawks got an insurance goal from Laurel Reinhardt. Reinhardt took a pass from Hollenga and put one in on the left side of the goal as well. It was Reinhardt's first goal of the season and gave Ft. Lewis the decisive 2-0 lead.

A scary moment took place in the 65th minute of the game as Ft. Lewis' Jessica Otero and Maverick Sherilyn Stoffel collided going for the ball. Stoffel would lie on the field for several minutes. Emergency crews were called and Stoffel was taken off with an apparent lower leg injury.

Ft. Lewis would preserve the shutout and win, 2-0.

The Skyhawks record improved to 11-2-1 and 6-2-1 in RMAC play while Mesa State fell to 8-7-0 and 5-6-0 in RMAC competition.

Mesa State will be on the road this Sunday as they travel to Pueblo to take on the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo. They will then return home on October 23rd to take on Colorado Christian at 2:00pm at Walker Field.
