Mesa State wrestling team opened RMAC action at CSU-Pueblo Wednesday night in both teams dual opener of the 2009 season. It marked the first wrestling match at CSU-Pueblo since February of 2001 when the program was dropped. MSC defeated the Thunder Wolves 27-12 in front of 2,012 fans to notch its first dual victory of the season.
MSC's Rhett Breed (133#), Chase Walker (157#), Cole Johnson (165#), Kyle Brightman (174#), Andy Laiminger (184#) and Trevor Stapp (285#) notched wins in the dual victory.
CSU-P started the historic evening with a victory at 125 pounds when Lyle Evans won a 4-1 decision over MSC's Miguel Baltazar. Evans leads the T-Wolves with 17 victories this season.
The Mavericks Rhett Breed won a major decision, 17-5, over Joe Jones at 133 pounds. It is the fifth win on the season for the freshman from Durango.
CSU-P won the next two matches at 141 and 149 pounds. Jason Wenger and Keith Johnson each lost close decisions, 10-8 and 9-4 respectively.
MSC regained the lead winning the next four matches beginning with #4 ranked Chase Walker's technical fall win (22-7/7:00) over Keenen Funk at 157 pounds. Cole Johnson (165#) followed with a 10-4 decision over Martin Dick. Redshirt freshman Kyle Brightman at 17# defeated Justin Grant 7-4. At 184 pounds Andy Laiminger pinned (2:25) Kellen Desmond for the victory.
CSU-P's Tony Chavarria notched a win at 197 pounds with a 13-8 decision over James Breidel.
Trevor Stapp closed out the evening giving the Mavericks a victory at the 285 pound weight class pinning (4:35) CSU-P's Frank Sandoval.
The dual victory for the Mavericks is the first dual win since the 2006-'07 season. MSC will travel to New Mexico Highlands for a match-up with the Cowboys on Thursday night.
