Mavs Drop Dual to Air Force

Tracy Borah Duals

Mesa State wrestling team posted an 18-16 victory over number 15-ranked Findlay Ohio in the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, hosted by Western State College. It is the first ranked opponent the Mavericks have defeated in just its third season after being reinstated as an intercollegiate varsity sport.

MSC jumped out of an 18-0 lead winning the first five matches. Findlay then went on a streak of its own, winning the last five matches. MSC's two point difference was made possible with a forfeit win by Keith Johnson at 149 pounds.

Miguel Baltazar (125#), Rhett Breed (13#), Jason Wenger (141#) and Chase Walker (157#) all won decisions. Nationally ranked (#3) Walker notched his 18th win of the year with a 4-2 overtime win against Michael Lybarger.

The Mavericks dropped afternoon duals to Division I Utah Valley State 40-6 and Air Force 36-3. Walker (157#) was the lone winner in the Utah Valley dual pinning his opponent in 4:56.

Rhett Breed (133#) posted the Mavericks three points in the Air Force loss (36-3) with a 10-3 decision over Tyler Untrauer. Air Force won six decisions and posted three falls.

MSC returns to RMAC dual action next Saturday at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.
