#6 Mountaineers Take Down Mavs

Chase Walker Earns Overtime Victory

    Mesa State's Chase Walker, ranked #3 in the latest Division II poll, was the Mavericks lone winner Wednesday night as the Mavericks hosted the No. 6-ranked team in the country, Western State. The Mountaineers won 32-3 and remain undefeated in RMAC action (2-0-0). The loss dropped the Mavs to 2-2-1 in RMAC matches.
    The Mountaineers won 9-of-10 dual matches including three major decision and one technical fall. 
    MSC's Walker won a 5-1 overtime decision over Nick Ross at 157-pound weight class. Following a scoreless first period Walker scored an escape and took the 1-point lead in to the final period. Ross scored on an escape and the two went in to overtime. Walker earned his 17th victory of the year on a take-down and near fall for the 5-1 decision.
    Western State opened the dual with three consecutive decisions and one major decision for a 13-0 lead. Rhett Breed (133#) trailed 4-2 heading into the third period before falling 9-2  to No.4-ranked Marques Bravo. 
    At 165 pounds MSC's Cole Johnson dropped a 5-1 decision to Skye Wells. Wells had a take-down in each of the first two periods and held a 4-1 lead going in to period three. An escape in the third period rounded out the scoring. 
    Western closed out the dual with a major decision at 184#, a technical fall victory at 197 and a 9-5 decision at 285. Western State's Charlie Pipher, son of MSC head coach, Chuck Pipher, defeated MSC's Andy Laiminger (184#) 15-5. Pipher entered the contest 19-5 overall and ranked #2 in the country in Division II. 
    MSC will travel to Gunnison, Colo., Saturday for the Tracy Borah Duals hosted by Western State College.
