Mavs Drop Close Dual at #6 Adams State

Mavs Win 4 Matches, 3 Falls

              Mesa State battled #6-ranked Adams State Friday night in Alamosa, Colo. The dual came down to the last match of the evening with the two teams tied at 24 entering the 184-pound match finale. Kyle Sand notched a major decision (10-1) over MSC's Andy Laiminger to lead the Grizzlies to a 28-24 win.

                Rhett Breed (133#), Keith Johnson (149#), Chase Walker (157#) each pinned their Grizzly opponent. Kyle Brightman (174#) won by forfeit for the Mavs.

MSC won four of the six matches including 3 pins. ASC opened the dual with three consecutive wins at 197, 285 and 125-pound weight class. ASC won six of the 10 matches recording 3 falls. ASC's Torben Walters won a 5-2 decision over James Breidel. MSC's Trevor Stapp (285#) and Miguel Baltazar (125#) were each pinned by their Grizzly counterpart.

The Mavericks won 3 of the next 4 matches, all pins. Rhett Breed (133#) pinned Dominic Valencia in the third period (6:32). At 141 pound ASC's Raymond Dunning posted his 17th win of the season by pinning MSC's Jason Wenger. Keith Johnson and #4-ranked Chase Walker pinned their man at 149 and 157 pound respectively. K. Johnson defeated Nick Dionisio and Walker pinned Omar Gonzalez for his 15th win of the year. Walker is now 15-3 overall and 3-0 in dual matches.

ASC bounced back with Noomis Jones' (165#) 3-1 decision over Cole Johnson. The Mavericks Kyle Brightman's forfeit at 174# tied the match at 24 points each with one remaining dual match at 184 pound class. Number 6-ranked Kyle Sand clinched the dual victory for the Grizzlies and remains undefeated, 2-0 in dual action. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 1-1-1.

MSC will return and host Colorado School of Mines in its first home match of the season on Saturday, January 17 at 7 p.m. at Brownson Arena.
