Mavs Defeat Cougars in Five

"Swing for Life" Cancer Awareness Night

                Mesa State College and Colorado Christian celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Thursday night at Brownson Arena as the two teams wore pink jerseys in the “Swing for Life” campaign.
                Former MSC player and founder of Swing for Life, Kathy Howa, and Sally Hancock, mother of MSC player, Sarah Hancock, both cancer survivors were on hand for the ceremonial first serve to start the match. The pink jerseys were auctioned off as well as souvenir autographed volleyballs, bracelets and t-shirts. All proceeds went to benefit the Swing for Life Foundation.
                MSC went on to defeat CCU in a five set match to cap off the nights festivities. MSC improved to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in league play with a 22-25, 25-12, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11 win over the Cougars who entered the game 5-10 and 1-5 in RMAC play.
               With the match tied at one set each the Mavericks reeled off 10 consecutive points to break a 10-10 tie to take set number three. The Cougars fought back to take set four 25-23 and force a fifth set. CCU held a 10-8 lead when the Mavs took command, winning seven of the next eight points for the win.
                 Freshman Corinne Cascioppo finished with a game high 22 kills and Alisan Tompkins added 17 as the only two players to record double digit kills in the match.  MSC had four players with double digit digs with senior libero, Ashley Loftsgard posting a team high 17.  Setter Tara King tallied 54 assists, adding eight digs and two kills on the night.
                  MSC will return to action Friday night against Metro State and wrap up the three match weekend with a Saturday afternoon game (3 p.m.) versus Regis.
